#takeoutart613 playlist

Welcome to our #takeoutart613 playlist!

Hi! 👋😀

We’re SHHH!! Ensemble, a piano/percussion duo dedicated to the creation and dissemination of new and rarefied sounds!

SHHH!!… a powerful utterance designed to draw attention forward… creating space and awareness… opening ears to something important.

SHHH!!… une déclaration puissante qui attire l’attention… en créant de l’espace et en aiguisant la conscience… ouvrant les oreilles vers quelque chose d’important.

First, a big thank you to the Young Arts Leaders Collective, donors and sponsors, and participating restaurants for helping to keep Ottawa artists creating and sharing during these difficult times through the #takeoutart613 initiative. A big thank you to you too, for your support!

Our #takeoutart613 curated playlist will take you through a tasting menu of what our duo is all about. *Best enjoyed through a good pair of headphones or speakers!

If you like what you hear, please feel free to leave a tip in our tip jar!

to kick things off… A little Amuse Bouche, composed earlier this spring by SHHH!! Percussionist Zac Pulak.

Using the ‘Do Mi Si La Do Ré’ pitches (AKA Domicile Adoré AKA Home Sweet Home) as the tonal structure for my piece, I built a multilayered composition that juxtaposes the many ways an individual may feel during isolation” – Zac

Next, Our Duo’s Arrangement of Italian-American Composer Mario CastelNuovo-Tedesco’s Fantasia for Guitar and Piano, op. 145 – 2nd movement

“Growing up, I heard a lot of Castelnuovo-Tedesco’s music (my dad is a classical guitarist and Castelnuovo-Tedesco composed prolifically for the instrument). This piece has a special place in my heart as I have had the opportunity to perform both the original (with my father) and the arrangement (with my partner Zac)!” – Edana

Now, for Some truly unique Sounds, Kevin Hanlon’s “SHHHuffle”

“SHHHuffle by Kevin Hanlon is composed of pre-recorded samples of marimba and piano being performed in unconventional ways. The samples are mixed, processed, augmented, and then organized into 30-45 second tracks. The tracks are played in iTunes on the shuffle setting. The performers respond in real time to the playback, improvising and layering ideas on top of, or underneath the tracks. No two performances are the same.”

To Close, One of our favourite recent Musical discoveries is Franco-Ontarian Composer Micheline Roi’s “Grieving the Doubts of Angels”

“We had the privilege of performing this work numerous times across Canada during our Winter 2020 Spirits tour, which ended on March 13th, just a day before things started to shut down due to the pandemic. We made this recording a couple of days later!

THANKS For Tuning In!

Best wishes and Stay Stafe!
